Insane in the membrane

2024

Digital Screenshots Printed on Paper

£50 - five prints available

Insane in the membrane is a long train of screenshots taken from the government website for petitions. Each screenshotted petition has been reviewed and rejected by the petitions committee. This website is freely available to view at www.petitions.parliament.uk

This piece is a reflection on the autocracy of democracy, how we are subjugated to votes only once every 4-5 years in the UK and how we do not have a physical rhetorical voice in parliament. We only have an MP that we hardly know. We have the ability to start petitions which is conceptually fantastic, but there is still an economy to petitions, they have to get to 100,000 signatures in order to be considered by the petitions committee. Each one of these screenshots is a petition that was put forward by an individual during the Conservative governments of Sunak - Johnson. Each one of these petitions is a plea, it’s a shout into the abyss, it’s a reflection of what the populace really wants.
On a final note, Amber was scrolling through the petitions website and came across a few wildcard petitions, for example “Make David Tennant a Lord”. As an update , there was a new petition filed and rejected on the 6th November 2024 “Give David Tennant a Knight ship”.
