They're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats
2024
Oil, Acrylic, Pastels and Spray Paint on Canvas
Emilia Bryant’s depiction of cats and dogs indulging in tiny, cartoonish figures resembling Donald Trump functions as visual satire and a pointed commentary on the absurdity of his words; "they are eating the dogs. They are eating the cats." Created the following days after watching the September 2024 presidential debate, it reflects the artist's visceral emotional response to the event, capturing the turmoil and frustration of the moment. After watching, Emilia immediately sketched out her idea and then transformed it into a painting over the next couple of days, witnessing the shared international disgust and disbelief unfold at Trump’s ignorant remark. Emilia used her usual artistic method of laying spray paint, oil and acrylic for this striking political purpose, a departure from her typical figurative abstract paintings though maintaining her usual bold expressive style. The satirical portrayal of Trump's words holds even more urgency today, as the implications of his communication style have returned to the centre of national and international discussions, as a result of the US election on the 5th November 2024.
EMILIA BRYANT
Emilia Bryant is an abstract figurative painter based in West London. Her practice typically explores the boundaries between representation and abstraction using the human form as the primary subject.
Emilia’s work is driven by a desire to offer viewers a mode of seeing that exceeds the literal, inspired by the emotional depth that can be conveyed through bold colours, expressive mark-making, and distorted perspectives. This interest emerged from an intrigue with 1950’s abstract expressionism, coupled with her pursuit of life modelling and drawing. Emilia primarily works in paint, frequently combining oil, acrylic, spray paint, pastels, and chalk. This range of materials allows her to build up layers and textures, expressing the complexity of the human form in ways that go beyond static depictions.
Emilia’s artistic practice has been a lifelong passion, but her interest in painting has become more focused since pursuing an art degree and engaging in a full-time artist residency, beginning September 2024.
