It looks like a dead whale... a dead whale
2024
Pencil and Ink on Paper
£800
The title of this work is taken from a statement by a Cuban man who recently went to see a Russian nuclear submarine moored in the harbour. Gen chose to make this drawing as she was researching images of whales. She had also recently visited submarines on a trip to Helsinki and Tallin, and being inside them reminded her of Jonah’s story in the Bible. Gen wanted to create something that would invite viewers to take time to look at a detailed drawing and think about what it could mean to them. It is an image that is extraordinary and strange, but it could potentially really happen. In this suggestive scene, a whale swims down to investigate a possible whale companion in distress on the sea-bed. It is however a wrecked nuclear submarine, several of which have been scuttled or sunk in northern seas. Drums of nuclear waste float down to the ocean floor, their damaging polluting effects seen in the presence of mutant two-headed fish.
GEN DOY
Gen Doy creates art as a means of communicating ideas and thoughts to an audience in an engaging way. She enjoys the research process in preparation for making the works just as much as the “artistic” creation. Current events, politics, social injustice, and the threats to the natural world, which includes humans, give Gen much to think about in terms of what art should be responding to. She selects various media which fit the subject best for example; sound, live performance, drawing, singing. Gen has been an artist all her life, on and off, since childhood. Currently she is experimenting with linking images, often drawings, to live performance. Gen is also interested in bringing historical material into a productive confrontation with the present, hopefully to provoke reflection and responses from those who experience her work. Sometimes she uses singing as a way of engaging audiences while encouraging them to participate.
